A long lost letter has resurfaced in Maine. 83 years ago, former school teacher, Miriam McMichael from Houlton sent the 9 page letter to her mother, Dollena McMichael in Pittsfield.

The US postal service has processed over 150 billion mail pieces to date. While that's impressive, they do drop the ball occasionally.

A long lost letter has resurfaced in Maine. 83 years ago, former school teacher, Miriam McMichael from Houlton sent the 9 page letter to her mother, Dollena McMichael in Pittsfield.

The letter was just recently found at the Pittsfield post office but it’s far too late. Both the sender and recipient have passed away since it was mailed in 1931.

Postal worker Michelle Rowell made the discovery and says she knew right away it was a very old piece of mail because of the 2 cent stamp.

The letter was soon delivered to 69-year-old Ann MacMichael, who is Miriam's niece and Dollena's granddaughter.

MacMichael commented “The very first part I love – it’s just so ironic because she said ‘I’m sorry I haven’t written sooner. I just haven’t gotten to it, but I know you’ve been anxiously waiting for a letter all week’ and here it is 83 years and it’s just being delivered!”

MacMichael is happy the letter was finally delivered and says it’s been fun reminiscing about her now-deceased relatives. She has sent a copy to her aunt’s son in Massachusetts, but poked a little fun at the USPS, joking she should probably just drive down to him and give him the letter in person.
