Renzi calls for EU to hit the growth button

3 years ago12 views

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi says Europe must soften its approach to austerity.

The leader of debt-laden Italy was addressing MEPs during another plenary session in Strasbourg, France.

“We signed, altogether – our predecessors – a pact that is called a ‘stability and growth pact’. There’s stability – but there’s also growth! And the request to have ‘growth’ as a fundamental element of the European economic policy is not made by a single country: it serves all of Europe, not only Italy,” he said.

But for some MEPs, there was precious little content on the exact policies that Renzi wanted to pursue.

Dutch Liberal MEP Sophie In’t Veld told euronews:

‘Having listened to the entire speech, i’m not entirely sure what the Italian presidency will be about. there was no program, no particular vision and i think that what he did do however, was he triggered a debate on the economic policies and the fiscal policies in the
EU,” said Dutch Liberal MEP Sophie In’t Veld.

The Italian premier Matteo Renzi is the man of the moment in Europe, thanks to his big success at the EU elections. At the political level he has reopened the debate on growth, but the Italian economy is still very sluggish and this weakens his position. After so many promises, Europe is awaiting to see his results if Renzi wants to became a credible European leader.
