MEXICO: CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT DOCTORS FACING TRIAL
"We are doctors, we are not Gods, or criminals"; thousands of doctors in Mexico are showing their support for 16 fellow practitioners, who have been arrested and are facing a criminal trial for alleged negligence following the death of a teenage boy. Health professionals feel the case will set a dangerous precedent and have been voicing their outrage on social media under the hashtag #yosoy17 which means I am the 17th.
The campaign is drawing strong support across the country; the movement`s Facebook page has over 93,000 members. Showing solidarity in unique ways … like these parents of a newborn baby who was operated on by one of the 16 accused of medical malpractice. They have posted a photo of the baby with a message of support for the doctor who saved their child`s life.
And although much of the campaigning is taking place online, there have also been street protests. On June 22, over 50,000 medical professionals took part in simultaneous demonstrations in 70 cities across Mexico. Peaceful protests calling for the charges to be dropped, a greater respect for the profession and an end to the criminalization of medical practice.
Some health professionals are saying it`s the lack of resources not the hospital staff that should be called into question.
