A pooch named Peanut has been crowned the winner of the "World's Ugliest Dog" contest. The event was held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma.
Peanut is from Greenville, North Carolina. He spent nine months as a shelter dog, but these days he’s living with his owner, Holly Chandler.
Prior to finding his home, Peanut was found abandoned and his body was badly burned. Staffers at the rescue center believe he was set on fire.
Chandler remarked “He doesn't have lips anymore. His eyelids are also gone, and so he can't close his eyes so therefore his eyes water. The tears drain into his nose and so he has nice little snot bubbles because of it. So it's great, that adds to his character.”
In addition to a four-foot long trophy, Chandler also got $1,500 prize money and she wants to use the extra cash to pay for other animals’ veterinary bills.
Peanut is only one of 29 dogs that took part in this year’s contest. For Chandler, the victory is more about sharing Peanut’s story than it is about the ‘Ugliest Dog’ title.
