Clashes between police and ethnic Albanian protesters erupt in Mitrovica, over the blockade of a main bridge.

The violence broke out when several hundred Albanians started throwing rocks and bottles at police.

They are angry over the Serbs' closure of this bridge for the past three years.

Police, including special units from the EU, responded with teargas and rubber bullets.

A police spokesman says 13 police officers and 10 civilians have been wounded and that five people were arrested.

It's one of the worst bouts of civil unrest since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008.

By Sunday evening, the situation was calm but with NATO troops, EU and Kosovo police holding their positions and guarding the bridge.
