France have come a step closer to qualifying for the last 16 of the World Cup after an emphatic showing against Switzerland.

Fans were left celebrating a dominant outing in Brazil after Les Blues won 5-2, scoring three in the first half.

Their performance so far has been in marked contrast to four years ago when France crashed out in the group stages. Delighted French fans in Brazil spoke of their renewed hope:

“We gave them their strength and they gave all that they had and we gave everything we had from the stands. We did what we could and they made us happy. Now this is madness. We are in Brazil, long live France, we will win the World Cup, we are going until the end.”

But for the Swiss it was a disappointing defeat, despite a late comeback:

“We did not expect this result. At least Switzerland got two goals, that is already something. But the result is really bad and we did not expect this.”

France’s triumph in Salvador comes after Costa Rica beat Italy to qualify for the next round. In doing so, England have been ruled out of progressing from Group D.
