Several members of the US Senate recently read Dr. Mehmet Oz the riot act for perpetuating diet scams.

He appeared at a hearing on the matter of fraudulent diet aids and the ads that promote them.

Dr. Oz has been known on many occasions to champion supplements that he says have a positive impact on weight loss, such as green coffee extract and raspberry ketone.

When describing the fat-burning aids, he has used enticing words including ‘magic’ and ‘miracle’.

Said the chair of the Senate subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Insurance “I don’t get why you need to say this stuff because you know it’s not true.”

She also asked Dr. Oz why he didn’t put his enthusiasm behind weight loss methods that have been proven to work, like restricting calories and increasing physical activity.

Dr. Oz defended himself by noting that once he endorses a general supplement, sellers are quick to package and market it oftentimes using his image illegally.

He also admitted that often times scientific evidence backing his claims is scarce, and asserted that the main point of his show is to offer hope.
