Air Force One is approaching its 30th year in service, and the government is gearing up to order a replacement.

A base requirement is that it be a 4-engine, wide-body commercial aircraft.

Thus, it’s said those in charge will soon be soliciting bids from the likes of Airbus and Boeing, but acquiring a craft is only part of what needs to happen.

As the plane functions as both a means of transportation and an airborne center of command, a lot of customization is needed.

Of course, nobody really knows what the inside of one looks like until it’s been retired, but there has been talk of what the next one may include.

A broadcast center is planned, as after the 9/11 attacks the need for the president to be able to address America while in flight was made apparent.

The plane also needs to function as a defensive barrier for the president and shield itself against electromagnetic pulses that could put the plane’s electronics in peril.

Other standard features include an oval office, sleeping quarters, and a shower.

Building the new Air Force One is estimated to take about 7 years.
