The Russian foreign minister says the assault on Iraqi cities by al-Qaeda-linked militants shows the total failure of the US-led invasion of the country in 2003.
Sergei Lavrov said the militant attacks have proved that the adventure by the US and Britain has not ended well. He added that the unity of Iraq is at risk, and that Russia stands in solidarity with the Iraqi leadership and people. Washington said earlier that it was ready to help Iraq, while Britain says it will not be sending troops back to the war-ravaged country. A large part of Iraq's second largest city was seized by Takfiri insurgents from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant on Tuesday. The militants have also pledged to march on the capital Baghdad.
