Police in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo have used tear gas to break up a protest just hours before the city hosts the opening World Cup match.

At least five people have been reported injured including a journalist from US television network CNN.

Protesters had tried to block a road linking the Corinthians Arena. The demonstration took place around 13km from the stadium where Brazil will play Croatia at 20.00 CEST.

Riot police attempted the disperse the estimated 50 protesters with tear gas and rubber bullets.

Protests have been taking place across Brazil in recent months over the cost of the hosting the tournament.
