Bird's Nest Soup aka Sexy Bird Saliva Soup - Why Would You Eat That?

China is the birthplace of this week's Why Would You Eat That? food - the infamous bird's nest soup. Cooked with nests fashioned from the spit of cave dwelling swiftlets, the soup has a long illustrious history dating back to emperors' meals. It's also an aphrodisiac, giving you a hormone kick. The core ingredient in bird's nest soup is, well... bird's nests. But not any bird nests made of twigs and dirt and hairpins and stuff. No. These are swiftlets' nests. This particular kind of bird lives in caves and makes their nest out of their congealed, sticky saliva, which helps it stick to moist cave walls. The nests are hard to get and quite expensive, so originally this soup was revered for royalty and aristocracy. Today it is more widely available, but still very high end. On top of it's delicious flavor, it's supposed to help with your immune system, your complexion, and (most importantly) the chemicals that make you want to get sexy.
