The city was re-captured hours after it was taken over in militant attacks from the north, west and the south. The insurgents freed some three-hundred prisoners upon taking control of the city earlier in the day. Tikrit was the second city to fall into militant hands in two days. On Tuesday, hundreds of them attacked the city of Mosul in Nineveh province and seized it. Some 14-hundred prisoners were released there following the attack. A number of Iraqi soldiers were also captured there. Latest reports say some of them were executed by the militants.
