Conservative radio personality Glenn Beck has come forward as the purchaser of a tattered, D-Day flag.

It was up for auction at Manhattan's Bonhams and ultimately drew a 350 thousand dollar winning bid.

Originally it was expected to bring 35 thousand dollars at most.

Having gone for 10 times its top estimate, curiosity about the item and its buyer spread.

As bidder anonymity is protected by law, it was unknown who claimed the 48-state Naval flag that flew on a ship at Normandy.

Finally, on his show Beck revealed himself as the buyer and called the artifact "the 20th century's Star-Spangled Banner."

He said he purchased the six-figure flag in partnership with his disaster relief charity, Mercury One.

Beck commented, “When I first saw this flag I was overwhelmed with the struggle and the power of the human spirit. While the human experience is itself exceptional, those who deny the will to endure and the willingness free mankind from those who wish to control and oppress miss what makes the average American truly exceptional throughout the world.”

The flag will be added to the Glenn Beck American History Collection.
