From Economic Growth to War Memorials: How Different Are Modi's Promises?
At a joint session of Parliament today, President Pranab Mukherjee outlined the new government's governance agenda. It is expansive and covers everything from a national sanitation programme, to education, to economic growth ranging from irrigation for the farmer to job creation, all in a transparent environment. Many of these promises sound much like those any government would make while taking over the reins of an economy in distress and a country grappling with poverty, corruption and violence, especially against women. So how much of the governance agenda is really new, how much is old wine in a new bottle? And will the new prime minister be able to deliver on these promises? We debate on The Buck Stops Here.
12-Hour Siege at Karachi Airport Ends
29 people died in a dramatic siege by at least 10 Pakistan Taliban terrorists on the Karachi airport for 12 hours. The army said they had eliminated all the attackers early this morning, but then there was resumption in firing till the airport was cleared. The breakdown in talks between the Pakistan government and the TTP clearly mean there will be more such attacks, which was one of the most audacious since the Mehran naval base attack in 2011.
