Diplomatic row over Tienanmen rumbles on between Beijing and Washington

The Chinese have officially made their displeasure known via a diplomatic protest to the United States following comments there that China should account for those killed in 1989’s pro-Democracy protests.
On the 25th anniversary of Tienanmen square massacre the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Hong Lei slammed American and international criticism of his country as a “total disregard of fact”, and “violation of China’s internal affairs”. Chinese media continues to ignore the event.
In Hong Kong tens of thousands of people turned out in a vigil for the dead and disappeared; the final death toll has never been revealed, with estimates ranging from several hundred to several thousand. It is one of the few places in China the events are remembered in public.
In London Chinese embassy officials assaulted a human rights organisation member and family member of a Tienanmen victim when they attempted to lay flowers on the embassy steps.
