Fireworks and celebrations as Egypt elects another ex-army chief as president.

4 years ago40 views

Egyptians have been celebrating in Cairo’s Tahrir Square after former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was officially declared the winner of the country’s presidential election.

The president-elect immediately addressed the nation urging all to work hard for a better future.

However a lower-than-expected voter turnout of only about 47 percent raises doubts about his ability to maintain popularity while attempting to fix Egypt’s battered economy.

While al-Sisi is idolised by many Egyptians after toppling Islamist president Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood, he has given few details over how how he is to affect change.

But for now his supporters appeared content to celebrate:

“Congratulations to al-Sisi. We hope he will live up to his responsibilities and we are with him and he deserves to be president of the country,” said one woman.

“People here love al-Sisi,” said another supporter. “The people will respond to his demands. We will stand beside him, we hope to develop our country for better, to make everybody live in security and peace.”

Reporting for euronews Mohammed Shaikhibrahim was in Tahrir Square:

“Egyptians have welcomed the new president with celebrations in Tahrir Square which is the place which has borne witness to all the recent changes in Egypt’s political landscape. Egyptians are now hoping that the new regime can achieve things where former regimes have failed.”
