The Solar Impulse 2, a solar-powered plane that is set to circle the globe in 2015, has made its inaugural flight.

Test pilot Markus Scherdel was in the cockpit for the aircraft’s maiden voyage. It took off from Payerne airfield in Switzerland at around 5:30 local time and returned approximately two hours later.

Scherdel reportedly said there were some vibrations early in the flight, that that the mission outcome was very positive overall.
