ONLINE SUPPORT FOR NORTHERN IRISH PARLIAMENTARIAN
As we can see from these pieces of amateur video footage that have been doing the rounds online, thousands took to the streets of Belfast in Northern Ireland on Saturday, to denounce the rise in racism across the country. The demonstration comes after Hong Kong born parliamentarian Anna Lo declared last week that she would not be standing for re-election, a decision she said stemmed from the growing hostility to foreigners and ongoing racist abuse from loyalists.
The rally was coordinated via social networks where Anna Lo`s announcement has caused something of a buzz. Web users in Northern Ireland, like the 18,000 members of this Facebook page, have been voicing their support. Many have posted under the #IStandWithAnna hashtag, slamming the rising levels of xenophobia and urging citizens to stand together to combat the problem.
Anna Lo has responded to this wave of solidarity in a statement posted to her party`s website. She extends her heartfelt thanks to all those who are taking a stand against racism in the country. As the “Belfast Telegraph” reports in its online edition, the combat is more relevant than ever before, as there are now two racist attacks being reported every day in Northern Ireland.
