Protests in Hong Kong mark Tiananmen Square anniversary
  • 10 years ago
Over a thousand protesters took to the streets of Hong Kong on June 1 ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown in Beijing.

They called for a democratic China and demanded that the Beijing central government officially accept a share of the responsibility for the June 4 1989 massacre.

The Chinese government has never released a death toll, but human rights groups and witnesses estimate between several hundred and several thousand people were killed in the clampdown.
