Netizens are in an uproar over a recent comment made by Charlize Theron. The backlash comes after the Oscar winning actress compared press intrusion into her private life to rape.

She was asked by Sky News if she ever Googled herself in her downtime. Her reply was “I don't do that, so that's my saving grace. When you start living in that world, and doing that, you start I guess feeling raped."

She continued speaking about the crazy media attention that comes as a consequence of being in the spotlight. She justified her correlation between press attention and sexual assault by saying that she considered her personal life and her son ‘sacred’.

Theron acknowledged she was grateful for her job as an actress but felt being in the limelight shouldn’t make her personal matters the focal point of news articles. Despite her best attempts to explain the rape comment, many social media users were outraged at the analogy.

Some think she trivialized sexual violence while others believe rape shouldn’t be used in any metaphor, especially those pertaining to celebrity discomforts. Given that Theron is an advocate for ending violence against women, the general opinion is that she should have known better than to make such a remark.
