The Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek, Michigan is now offering a unique gardening solution. As part of an event called ‘Zoo Doo’, the facility is selling poo from exotic animals.

According to horticulturist Frank Cummins, the zoo has roughly 50 yards of compost ready to go. Members can purchase a load of it for $25. The price for non-members is 30 bucks.

As a straightforward sales pitch of sorts, Cummins remarked “You can get cow manure from the store for two or three dollars for a little bag, but a whole truck load for $25, that’s a lot of little bags.”

The poo selling event, strange as it may sound, actually serves as a worthwhile cause. The money taken in helps the non profit facility feed the animals and pay for upkeep of the grounds.

The park typically uses the compost as fertilizer but excess is often left over. Previously, the zoo gave the manure away, free of charge.

According to Cummins, some of the manure takers would later sell it for top soil. That’s when he had the idea to make a profit off the zoo's own poo.

Herbivores are the only contributing creatures to the manure mix, to ensure the compost is free of diseases. Cummins pointed out buyers also earn some bragging rights, being able to tell others their garden contains zebra poop.
