Suicide bomber kills 19 in Baghdad mosque

STORY: A suicide bomber on Tuesday (May 27) killed at least 19 in the middle of noon prayer inside a Shi'ite mosque in central Baghdad, according to police.

The explosion, which also injured at least 36 people took place in Al-Wathba Square.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but suicide bombings are the trademark of al Qaeda's local affiliate, the Islamic State of Iraq, which has stepped up attacks against Shi'ites in recent months.

Sunni Islamist militants who have been regaining ground in the country over the past year and who have overrun several towns in recent weeks.

Nearly 8,000 civilians were killed in Iraq past 12 months, marking the country's bloodiest year since sectarian violence began to abate in 2008.
