Santa Barbara police said that they had contact with Rodger on three occasions in the past year, one of which included a welfare visit in response to video rants and killing threats he posted online.

The police check on April 30 was their third and final encounter with Rodger before the May 23 Santa Barbara shooting spree. After seeing one of his video rants online, Rodger's mother called one of the 22-year-old's therapists who then sent police to the man's house in Isla Vista.

Six officers interviewed the man outside his building, but did not arrest him after they found him to be acting normal. Authorities also did not find any history of gun-use at the time.

In the 140-page manifesto sent out shortly before he killed 6 and injured 13 in Isla Vista, Rodger wrote that a police search would have turned up the guns and the plans he had written about the shooting, foiling his plans for retribution. He removed the videos following the police check, but reposted them closer to the time of the mass shooting.

On January 5, 2014, Rodger made a citizen's arrest when his roommate allegedly stole $22 worth of candles from him. In July last year, he also claimed to have been beaten, but deputies suspected that he was the aggressor in the incident.
