Thailand's army declared a coup on Thursday, detaining key party leaders and suspending the constitution in a bid to restore order after another six months of protests and violence.

In a TV statement, army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha promised to restore order and enact political reforms. The cabinet has been informed they are to report to the military, TV broadcasting is suspended and political gatherings are prohibited. A nationwide curfew is now in place from 10pm to 5am local time.

Just three days earlier, the military declared martial law over the political stalemate that followed the resignation of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra over corruption charges on May 7, stressing it wasn't a coup.

Gen Chan-ocha said it will be business as usual — minus the soldiers everywhere. The military also said it will provide security to foreigners.

The army has sent troops and vehicles to 'escort' protesters away from rally sites. This is Thailand's 19th actual or attempted coup since 1932. If 'The Land of Smiles' is serious about reforms, maybe it should stop having so many coups?
