An avalanche swept the slopes of Mount Everest friday along a route used to climb the world's highest peak, killing at least 12 Nepalese guides, injuring three and leaving another three missing.

Today's incident is the deadliest day on the mountain, surpassing May of 1996 when a storm on the famous peak killed 8 climbers.
