An Israeli motorist was killed on Monday by a gunman shooting at vehicles on the road near the Palestinian city of Hebron.
According to Israeli reports, the man was travelling with his wife and four children on Route 35 near the Tarkumia checkpoint outside Hebron when a man wearing a black helmet and armed with an automatic rifle opened fire at passing vehicles.
The driver of the car, a police officer from the town of Modiin, was killed, while his wife and his daughter were reportedly injured in their upper bodies and brought to a local hospital.
After the shooting, dozens of army vehicles spread out into nearby Palestinian villages, while a security barrier was erected at Hebron's main entrance, Channel News Asia reported.
According to the Jerusalem Post, the gunman managed to escape from the scene.
The incident could raise tensions at a time when the United States is struggling to keep peace talks alive in the Middle East, Reuters reported.
Hebron is home to nearly 200,000 Palestinians and houses about 700 Jews in 80 settlements who live under Israeli army protection.
