Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst has described her win as “not just a victory for me, but for the people who believe in a future without discrimination, based on tolerance and respect. This transcends borders and has nothing to do with East and West”.

Drag artist Wurst swept Austria to victory – wearing high heels, a tight dress and a full beard – at the 2014 Eurovision final in the Danish capital Copenhagen.

In the lead-up to Eurovision, some commentators said Wurst’s appearance could prove too divisive to secure Austria first place.

But the singer stormed to victory on the night with the ballad “Rise like a Phoenix”.

Austria collected 290 points. The Netherlands finished second with 238 points.

Wurst was given a heroine’s welcome when she returned to Vienna, with crowds of fans gathered at the airport in celebration.
