Lots of people will tell you – don’t judge a book by its cover. A recent case proves that’s some pretty good advice.

An innocent looking, 90-year-old man has been sentenced in connection to a huge cocaine haul. Leo Sharp is a World War II veteran from Indiana.

With a frail look to him, he appears to be anything but a drug courier. Sharp appeared in court for his sentencing. He told the judge “All I can tell you, your honor, is I'm really heartbroken I did what I did. But it's done.”

Last year, Sharp admitted to hauling multiple loads of cocaine into Michigan for a Mexican drug cartel. He was arrested in 2011 following a traffic stop in Detroit.

According to the government, Sharp took in about $1 million for his role in the drug ring. During the court proceedings, Sharp’s defense lawyer Darryl Goldberg talked about his past in the military and how he fought Nazis during World War II.

Goldberg cited dementia as the reasoning behind his choice to take part in the crime, claiming it led him to make bad decisions.

The sentencing was handed down on Sharp’s 90th birthday. He has been ordered to spend three years in prison.
