Twenty years ago, the first general elections took place in South Africa in which citizens of all races were allowed to take part. People voted with a smile. This Wednesday they will vote again - but this time, many casting their ballot do so feeling angry. Over the past 20 years the gap between the rich and poor has increased. People say reforms in areas like farming have not been quick enough and infrastructure is still poor.

There is also anger over corruption. President Jacob Zuma’s waning popularity was most clearly demonstrated when he was booed during Nelson Mandela's memorial service. A recent report revealing that he had benefited unduly from public money spent on his lavish home has not helped matters. France 24 reports on the issues weighing on voters' minds.

Programme prepared by Narimène Laouadi and Elise Duffau.
