Pro-Russian separatists in Slaviansk vow to keep fighting

A day after suffering heavy losses in Slaviansk, pro-Russian separatists are not backing down.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) SLAVIANSK SEPARATIST DMITRY SAYING:

"The People's Militia of Donbass will never surrender. We will fight to the very end. None of the guys from militia planned to leave and will not leave. We will fight to the end. The very name of the town of Slaviansk speaks for itself - Slavs. And Slavs do not surrender."

Ukrainian officials said more than 30 separatists were killed in fighting on Monday.

In Kiev, the Ukrainian security service chief was quick to lay blame.

(SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) UKRAINIAN SECURITY SERVICE (SBU) CHIEF VALENTYN NALYVAICHENKO SAYING:

"We confirm that there are foreign soldiers from the Russian Federation, foreign soldiers from the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and local criminals who illegally possess weapons and shoot our people."

In Slaviansk, barricades sit on nearly every block.
