Male students living in the dorm at a college in Madrid are forbidden to use the washing machines.

If they need their clothes cleaned, the men of the Duque de Ahumada de la Guardia Civil are advised to find a female to do it for them.

Those that defy the rule and use the building’s facilities face being barred for anywhere from 15 days to 3 months.

Challenging the no-males-allowed rule can also result in harsh penalties.

Nonetheless, people have been trying to have to mandate lifted, but for the past three years calls for change have been ignored.

Among the protestors is a representative association for the Guardia Civil officers.

A spokesperson for the group said, "What is being asked of residents is obsolete, unjust, sexist and borderline ridiculous. In today's world, it makes no sense that male residents would have to secretly pass their clothes to a female or visit a laundromat to do their laundry."

The school maintains their position, saying that the laundry room was put in at the request of females so they could wash their undergarments.

Equal access is granted to an off-site service, and the cost for using it is included in monthly student fees.
