Pro-Russian protesters in the eastern city of Slavyansk say the Ukrainian army has conducted a full-scale attack on them, using armored vehicles, helicopters and tanks.
Ukraine's interior ministry says army forces are now controlling at least ten checkpoints set up by Slavyansk protesters. Reports say at least one protester has been killed and several others have been injured in gun battles between the two sides in various locations. The Ukrainian government has confirmed that an army helicopter has been shot down by pro-Russian gunmen, but protesters say at least two helicopters were downed. Also, an army pilot has been killed and another one arrested there. The city, with a population of nearly a 160,000, is one of over a dozen others in the east that are under the control of pro-Russian protesters.
