Turkish protesters express outrage at Egyptian death sentences

Protesters gathered outside the Egyptian consulate in Istanbul on Monday night.

Many of them carried banners expressing outrage and solidarity after the sentencing to death by an Egyptian court of the spiritual leader of the Muslin Brotherhood and 682 supporters.

“Today, we know that the Muslims in Egypt are on trial unjustly. We know that this (sentencing) is cruelty towards them. And we see that the world is indifferent to it,” said one demonstrator.

Two men were detained after trying to place the “Rabaa flag”, a symbol of support for the toppled Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi, on the consulate building.

The death sentences have sparked international alarm as the Egyptian authorities continue their crackdown on the Islamist movement.
