Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has announced his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election.
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Laham says Assad has officially declared that he'll seek another seven-year term in office. The crisis-hit Arab country will hold the presidential vote on June 3. It will be Syria's first such election after a constitutional amendment changed the old system of referendum on a single candidate. So far, seven people-- including a woman, have announced their candidacy for the top post which is widely expected to be won by the incumbent president.
