The death toll from powerful storms sweeping across south-central America is rising.

At least 18 people have been killed as tornados wiped out entire neighbourhoods in Arkansas.

Winds ripped houses off their foundations and flipped cars on top of the rubble in the small town of Vilonia in central Arkansas.

The fatalities are the first of this year’s tornado season. At least one person was killed in neighbouring Oklahoma.

Rescuers and homeowners continue digging through rubble.

Scott Barrier, a Vilonia resident said: “It took all of our trees. We had a big motor home and moved it into the house, busted out the windows.”

The severe storm system continues pushing its way across the country. People living in the Midwest and South bracing themselves for severe hail, high winds and tornados.
