Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has been sworn in for another five-year term in office.

State television showed the president sitting in a wheelchair taking the oath, followed was a brief statement thanking the Algerian people for their renewed confidence.

“I thank the Algerian people for their renewed confidence,” Bouteflika said in a weak voice. “The April 17 election was a victory for democracy. It was a lesson in democracy.”

It was one of his rare public appearances since suffering a stroke last year.

The ailing veteran politician, who has been in power for 15 years, was re-elected for a fourth term with 80 percent of the vote, but the main opposition claims the poll was rigged.

Many of his critics have raised questions about his ability to govern.

Some have said said he’s not fit to lead the country for another five years.
