LED ZEPPELIN: NEW YORK & ENGLAND PART 3 OF 7

JUNE 5: Fans of Led Zeppelin decided to bring it on home last week as the band's first official DVD release sold 120,000 units to shatter the record for a music video debut, according to distributor Atlantic Records. In addition to the two-disc set ranking No. 1 on the weekly music video charts, the three-disc CD How the West Was Won placed first on the album charts with sales of some 154,000 units. Atlantic Records reportedly shipped 250,000 DVD units and 500,000 CD sets.

The previous first-week music DVD sales record was about 61,000 units of Paul McCartney's Back in the U.S., which was released in November. The Eagles' Hell Freezes Over is the top-selling music DVD overall at about 470,000 units since its 1999 bow. The Zeppelin DVD was the top-selling DVD of any kind at Tower Records/Video and Amazon.com in the week ended June 1. It placed No. 2 at Buy.com and DVD Empire and No. 3 at Best Buy and Circuit City, according to VB research.

The DVD set, which features classic '70s performances by the quartet, is being marketed by Atlantic in collaboration with Warner Strategic Marketing. The DVD also was a great success overseas, taking the No. 1 slot on the music video charts in Australia, Canada, France, Norway, Sweden and the U.K. and ranking in the Top 5 in Austria, the Netherlands and Hong Kong. "The response to these Led Zeppelin live recordings has been nothing short of phenomenal," Atlantic Group co-chairman/CEO Val Azzoli said in a statement.
