The United Nations' religious freedom monitor urges Bahrain to halt discrimination against the country's Shia majority.

The UN body slammed the Persian Gulf kingdom after it expelled the representative of the top Shia religious authority Grand Ayatollah Sistani. U-N expert Heiner Bielefeldt said the case of Sheikh Hussein al-Najati is a stark illustration of the broader mistreatment of Shias in Bahrain. He said the move appears to be a religiously motivated discrimination. Iran has also criticized the move after Manama decided to cancel Najati's citizenship. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian called the move provocative and wrong.
