A teacher was killed and two students wounded on Monday after a 12-year-old boy opened fire on campus at Sparks Middle School in Nevada.

At around 7:15 a.m. local time, the shooter reportedly pulled out outside a gun and shot one of his classmates who had been making fun of him outside the school before class.

Math teacher Michael Landsberry confronted the shooter but was told to back up, before he opened fire several times, killing him.

Seventh-grade student Andrew Thompson described the scene to local television station KOLO by saying "He [the shooter] walked up to a teacher and says back up. The teacher started backing up and he pulled the trigger."

According to reports, several students tried to carry the teacher away from the scene but were told by a vice principal to run for safety. They left the body on the ground and ran inside the school.

Witnesses said the shooter then threatened other students with the gun before shooting at another teacher through a building window. He then shot and injured a second student from a distance.

The shooter reportedly committed suicide shortly afterwards. Authorities said the motive for the shooting remained unclear.

One of the students, Amaya Newton, and her mother said they thought the shooter had been bullied in the past, CNN reported.

According to Reuters, "'Classes and after-school activities were canceled for the rest of the week and counselors would be on hand to work with students and staff members who were traumatized by the shooting', the school district said.

"The incident marked the latest in a string of shooting rampages across the United States in recent years, including a shooting last December at a Connecticut elementary school that killed 20 students and six adults and helped reignite a national debate over gun control."
