4 years ago34 views

Social organizations and inhabitants from shantytowns decided to occupy parts of downtown Buenos Aires to protest dire conditions in the slums and a lack of housing policies from the government. Their protest includes a mass hunger strike
According to the organizations, the existing policies favor property speculation which forces out the poor from the cities. Experts say the solution to these problems could be sought in the handover of affairs, installation of utility services in the slums and transparent allocation of resources. With a population of approximately two hundred thousand inhabitants, these slums lack of basic infrastructure like sewage system, garbage collection and public facilities like schools and hospitals. Press TV tried to contact government officials, but they declined to comment on the issue. Demonstrations like this are also being held in other Latin American cities, like Rio de Janeiro, and reveal a housing crisis related to wealth concentration and decades of poor urban planning. Most protests have common demands: improving infrastructure, creating job opportunities and paying housing subsidiess
