Thousands of Christians have flocked to Jerusalem, like they do every Easter, to commemorate, as is tradition, the death of Jesus Christ by walking the “Via Dolorosa”.

The faithful follow the same route that Jesus is believed to have walked, carrying his cross to where he was crucified.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which opened its doors to pilgrims from all over the world on Good Friday, is said by Christians to be the site of Christ’s Crucifixion.

In the Philippines, Catholics flagellated themselves and carried wooden crosses re-enacting the last hours of Jesus Christ.

Around 20 Filipinos and a danish filmmaker were nailed to crosses. The Catholic Church has denounced it as a corruption of Christ’s suffering for others.

The annual ritual draws thousands of spectators to the city of San Fernando every year.
