On today’s cinematic Encore! Lisa Nesselson discusses two movies for grown-ups. "The Best Offer" is the first English-language film by Giuseppe Tornatore who gave us "Cinema Paradiso" in 1988. Geoffrey Rush is superb as a fastidious auctioneer who gets in over his haughty head when asked to evaluate the contents of a mansion.
Plus: actor John Turturro's fifth film as a director, "Fading Gigolo", has a surprising cast including Woody Allen, Sharon Stone and France's own Vanessa Paradis. Allen's character, Murray Schwartz, accidentally goes into business with his friend Fioravante, played by Turturro. The business? Sleeping with wealthy women of a certain age for money. This potentially sordid premise is handled with bittersweet humour.
We also take a look at Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s film "Real", which mixes memory and manga in a stylized slog.
