Fifteen people died on Sunday when a bus left the road and plunged into a shallow ravine in the Southern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

The bus, carrying 52 people, was traveling from Curitiba to Rio de Janeiro when it veered off the road at around 2 a.m. near the 300km marker of the Regis Bittencourt highway, about 50km south of the city of Sao Paulo before coming to rest at the bottom of a shallow gully.

Reports suggested the the driver may have fallen asleep just before the bus left the road, adding that he would be charged with manslaughter.

Police reports said that thirteen people were pronounced dead at the scene, with two more people dying in hospital.

The injured were taken to local hospitals. The number of people hurt was not officially confirmed.

Around two dozen ambulances were sent to the scene of the accident to take care of the injured.
