A car bomb went off in a remote region of the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon early on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

The explosion occurred about 20 km from the border with Syria. A Hezbollah base is also nearby.

An explosive-laden car was running near the villages of Sbouba and Hrabta around 3:00am. Finding the car suspicious, Hezbollah officials followed the car in two vehicles. The driver detonated the bomb, sending out a huge blast.

Reuters quoted a local reporter, who said that the car was carrying about 50 kg of explosives and intended to attack the Hezbollah base.
At least two vehicles, one of them overturned, were severely damaged, leaving scraps of metal at the scene. Lebanon's National News Agency said ambulances were seen racing to the site of explosion.

The final death toll was not announced yet, but it is known that the driver was dead and at least two officials pursuing the bomber were injured.

Lebanon has seen more violence in the past six months, as Shi'ite militant group Hezbollah vowed to support President Bashar al-Assad of Syria. The move has angered Sunni Muslims at home and in Syria, who support the rebels. Last month, more than 23 people were killed in explosions targeted at the Embassy of Iran in Beirut.

Lebanon is a religiously diverse country. According to the International Religious Freedom Report for 2012 published by the U.S. Department of State, over 50 percent of the population practice Muslim: half of them are Sunni Muslims; half Shi'ite Muslims.
