Starting this summer, New Yorkers will have the option of renting an umbrella when an unexpected storm hits the city.

A new company called ‘brellaBox says they plan to start a pilot umbrella rental program that will include 16 hours of free rentals from one location in the Financial District of the city.

It will be similar to the bicycle rental system Citi Bike, also in New York City.

If the three week trial is successful, ‘brellaBox has plans to open five hundred boxes located throughout the city that will rent umbrellas at the rate of two dollars and fifty cents for twelve hours, or people can buy an umbrella for fifteen dollars starting in the Spring of 2015.

Peggy Levee, owner of Rain or Shine, an umbrella store in New York City is quoted as saying: “People think an umbrella is a disposable item or are more concerned with how lightweight or small it is rather than how durable and strong it’s going to be. This is for somebody who just doesn’t want to be bothered carrying one.”

There are already lots of umbrella stands in New York City, but the quality of the umbrellas they sell is notoriously bad, and they break easily in heavy storms or wind.
