A church in the wealthy town of Davidson, North Carolina has installed a statue that depicts Jesus as a homeless man.

Close inspection reveals the crucifixion marks upon them.

When the statue was new, it was mistaken for an actual homeless person.

In fact, one woman called the police when she saw it.

Another resident in the town wrote a letter to the newspaper’s editor, complaining that the figure gave her the creeps.

Not all of the residents are against it, however.

The church’s reverend is supportive of the bronze sculpture, which is a memorial for a parishioner, and the conversation it sparks.

The reverend also pointed out that Jesus likely lived as a vagrant himself.

Duplicates of the art piece are being installed in select churches around the country, including Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Grand Haven, Michigan, where their reverend recently posed the question “How can we worship a homeless man on Sunday, then ignore one on Monday?”
