Seven chimps escaped the Africa area chimp habitat at the Kansas City Zoo Thursday afternoon around 3:30.

The ringleader chimp managed to acquire a 5 to 6 foot branch from one of the trees in their area. The chimp leaned the branch against the wall and convinced six other chimps to get in on the action. They climbed the branch, walked along a dividing wall, and found their way into the zookeepers' area.

Visitors at the zoo were ushered into locked buildings for their protection until the monkey business was over. Zookeepers used fruits, vegetables, and malted milk balls to lure the chimps back into their secured area. The entire ordeal lasted about 90 minutes.

Zoo officials let people leave at around 5:30 and no persons or animals were injured. Zookeepers scanned the area for other loose or fallen branches to prevent similar incidents in the future.
