LA cops mistake Tosh.0 staffer John Winkler for stabbing suspect, shoot and kill him

Los Angeles county sheriff's deputies accidentally shot and killed 30-year-old John Winkler at around 9:30 p.m. Monday. Winkler had worked as a production assistant on the show Tosh.0.
Winkler and another friend were visiting their downstairs neighbor. A roommate of that neighbor, Alexander McDonald, climbed over the second story balcony to enter his own home. McDonald then attacked and held the men hostage with a 10-inch butcher knife.
Police responded to a panicked 911 call reporting a thin white man in a black shirt who was threatening the men in the apartment. They knocked on the door but didn't get a response.
One of victims escaped out of the apartment and was bleeding from the neck. Winkler followed close behind and they both ran towards the deputies. Winkler fit the description of the suspect leading the deputies to believe the assault to be ongoing.
Three officers fired four times fatally wounding Winkler and striking another victim in the leg. The deputies then heard fighting sounds coming from inside the apartment. They entered and found McDonald on top of a third victim and clawing at his face.
McDonald, 27, was arrested and charged with torture, murder, and two counts of attempted murder. The deputies were put on leave but will return to duty next week.
