Suicide attack: 5 journalists killed in attack on news station in Iraq

Five journalists were killed when four gunmen wearing explosive vests stormed a news television station in the northern city of Tikrit, Iraq, on Monday (December 23).
The gunmen stormed the Salahuddin channel building after detonating a bomb in a car parked near the entrance. Five employees were killed, including a female news anchor, before security forces arrived on the scene to engage the assailants in a firefight.
Two of the attackers blew themselves up as security forces raided the station. The others were killed in clashes before they managed to detonate the explosive vests they were wearing. Security forces retook the building after the militants were killed.
Local police say among those killed in the attack were Salahuddin television's chief news editor, a copy editor, a producer, a presenter and the archives manager.
A curfew has been imposed on Tikrit, and Salaheddin TV stopped broadcasting until further notice following the attack.
Political and sectarian violence has spread through Iraq this year, with thousands of deaths reported. Tensions are particularly high in the Sunni community, which has felt marginalized by the Shiite-dominated government, according to CNN.
The Committee to Protect Journalists, a watchdog group, said in a report this month that journalists have been subjected to continued threats and killings. The report focused on unrest in Mosul, the religiously and ethnically diverse city in Iraq's north.
