New Afghan president should 'reach a political compromise'

After Afghanistan’s presidential election, trucks delivered ballot boxes to the Independent Election Commission in Kabul as vote counting got underway.

Political analysts are saying that the new president should be willing to “reach a political compromise.”

Haroon Mir, political analyst, said: “Many candidates represent the interest of specific ethnic groups and it’s for the good of Afghan people and the country that if we could reach a political compromise in the runoff between the top two contenders, that will be a better outcome.”

A runoff is widely expected since no candidate is likely to get the majority needed for an outright victory.

Final results are not expected for a week or more.
